Toshiba has unveiled its first Chromebook and it's a bold effort, with a 13.3-inch screen aimed at those who want a little more real estate for their online shenanigans.

The screen has a 1366 x 768 resolution and naturally, being a Chromebook, comes with Chrome OS installed. Running the show is an Intel Celeron ULT ("Bay Trail") processor and graphics are integrated. Par for the course for this kind of device.

There is a 16GB iSSD on board for storage with 100GB of free cloud storage on Google Drive. It comes with 2GB of RAM too.

Naturally, the whole point of a Chromebook is to work in an online capacity, and therefore there is access to applications for all manner of Google services, including Maps, Google+ Hangouts, YouTube and the Chrome Web Store. There are also offline applications so you can keep on working when there's no internet connection, including Gmail and Google Docs.

An HD webcam sits in the top centre of the screen bezel and stereo speakers are present for audio duties. But the grandstand feature, perhaps, is that you can get up to nine hours of battery life out of the Tosh.

In the hand it is fairly light at 1.5kg, considering that it's a 13-incher. The thickness of just 20.2mm helps.

The build is plastic, but at least there's no attempt at wacky colour schemes. Thankfully, Toshiba has opted for just one design in "light gold", silver to you and me.

An HDMI socket sits on the side if you want to hook it up to an external TV or display, and there's two USB 3.0 ports and an SD card slot to increase the of local storage space. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 are mainstays.

As Chromebooks go, this one has a nice feel about it and the HD screen is crisp and colourful. At £249 it won't break the bank either. Expect it to hit the UK around February.
