Datawind is aiming at the budget market with the launch of its £29.99 UbiSlate 7-inch tablet, following success in India.

The cheapest of the line, the UbiSlate 7Ci features a 7-inch TFT capacitive display, 1GHz Cortex A8 processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of flash storage, front VGA camera and Android 4.0.

The UbiSlate 7C+ model adds EDGE 2G connection for £69.99, while the UbiSlate 3G7 adds 3G GSM connectivity, rear 2-megapixel camera, and Android 4.1 for £129. A SIM card can be popped in the 7C+ and 3G7 tablets to make phone calls, and both include "one year of basic browsing free of charge".

Given the price, Datawind's tablets are aimed at bringing affordable technology to households and the classroom. At £29, the UbiSlate tablet is ridiculously cheap. Of course, you're not finding the best specifications in the world, but for the entry-level customer this tablet might do the trick.

"With recent figures showing that in the UK, 29 per cent of the poorest households have no computer and 36 per cent no internet, we’re working to bring affordable technology to the many hundreds of thousands of households excluded from benefiting from the digital revolution”, said Suneet Singh Tuli, CEO at UbiSlate.

In the first quarter of 2013, Datawind became India's leading tablet maker with its Aakash and UbiSlate tablets. The company was shipping 10,000 tablets daily during January to March 2013, beating worldwide leader Apple. Now the company is looking for the same success in the UK.

“The development of the tablet stemmed from the realisation that lack of internet adoption in many parts of the world was primarily because of lack of affordability, said Suneet. "Our aim is to bridge the gap by offering cost-effective, high-specification devices and internet access that offer excellent value to all.”

The tablets are available from the UbiSlate website. DataWind says you can still receive the tablets by Christmas.
