Set in the same period as Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, it essentially dispenses with the free-running assassination side of the latest console title and concentrates on the ship battles and pirate-based shenanigans that have gained so much critical acclaim.
You take on the role of Alonzo Batilla and must embark on a quest to find the treasure of La Buse. You'll cross paths with some of the ancillary characters from Black Flag along the way, including Blackbeard, Bellamy and Hornigold, which ties it in nicely with the main franchise.
The sea battles are the main part of the game, but you can also manage your crew, upgrade your ship and recruit new crew members when the others have died in battle. Plus, the game is presented using a new 3D graphics engine that Ubisoft claims sets a new standard for mobile gaming.
Assassin's Creed: Pirates costs £2.99 and is available now.
