Apple working on 4K iPad Pro with 12.9-inch screen?

After Apple recently won the Pocket-lint Best Product at the 2013 Awards it’s going to be a tough one to improve on. But it appears Apple is working on two successors, dubbed the iPad Pro and iPad Maxi, both with super high resolution displays.

According to leaks from inside Foxconn, Apple is currently working on a larger 12.9-inch iPad, as we’ve heard before. Now PadNews has been told these larger displays will be at 2K and 4K resolutions.

A 4K UHD panel in an iPad would put Apple out in front for resolution like the good old days when Retina Display actually meant something impressive. The iPad Maxi will be 2K meaning a 1440 x 2560 resolution on the 12.9-inch screen will deliver 228ppi. Not much better than current 1080p screens then.

The iPad Pro should output a hefty 3840 x 2160 resolution, meaning 342ppi. It all sounds great and should help usher forward the 4K revolution. But with rumoured mobiles like the Vivo XPlay 3S already set to pump out 551ppi mobile displays Apple’s bump in resolution may be a little late.

According to supply chain rumours so far, a release date for the 2K iPad Maxi should be sometime in April of 2014. While the 4K iPad Pro is expected as an incremental update later in the year around October.

It’s all supply chain chat right now but that’s how it always starts so we’re looking forward to watching a 4K film, when they finally start to be released, on a new iPad Maxi or Pro soon.
