Kindle Fire HDX 8.9-inch tablet ships today

The new Kindle Fire HDX 8.9-inch will ship today. If you haven’t ordered one and are considering it, you’ve chosen well. Perhaps you’ve seen the new advert on TV showing the Mayday button which connects you to tech support in 15 seconds or less. But the hardware itself is impressive too.

The Kindle Fire HDX, at 374g and 34 per cent lighter than the last generation, offers an 8.9-inch display at 2560 x 1600 resolution (339ppi). Under the hood is a 2.2GHz quad-core processor with Adreno 330 GPU and 2GB of RAM. There’s also an 8-megapixel camera, optional 4G and the Mayday button for support.

The Mayday button is a clever move by Amazon to draw the older, more tech-fearing, users of Kindles over to tablets where even more content can be sold to them. But this tablet really is a top-level slate in itself so should appeal to everyone.

The Kindle Fire HDX 8.9-inch starts at £329 for the 16GB Wi-Fi only model and is available now.
