Sony has just deemed which devices in its Xperia portfolio range are eligible to receive the latest and greatest Android OS from Google, as well as the not-so latest and greatest OS.
Starting with the latter, Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, which debuted on 24 July, Sony said it would start rolling out an upgrade to the OS for the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia SP, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1. The company also confirmed the Xperia T, Xperia TX and Xperia V will jump software versions to Android 4.3. Expect all of these updates to land in December.
As for Android 4.4 KitKat, which just debuted on 31 October, Sony added some of the previously mentioned Xperia devices to the upgrade pool again, including the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1. Apparently, they are all a part of the "first raft" that will make it to KitKat. In other words, more Sony devices could get an upgrade too.
Sony didn't specify when KitKat would land for the above handsets - only mentioning that it would give specific information on product upgrade timings and software features "as things progress" and that software rollouts are a phased process. Timings and availability may vary by market and carrier as well, the company added.
Still, a promise is a promise; Android OS upgrades for Xperia devices all around! That's welcomed news, indeed.
