You can keep the Grammies, the Golden Globes and the Oscars. The only result that really matters at this time of year surely is ... (drum roll) ... the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch.

Last year over 400,000 people spent an hour of their weekend counting the birds that they could see in their gardens.

Sounds a bit daft I know, but it's valuable source of data for the ornithological boffins and they can't do it without us.

We're mentioning it today to give you all time to get out and buy yourself some binoculars and a notepad and pen. Oh, and a bobble hat and a Thermos if you're going for the complete look.

Go on, get twitching.
