Short films were once only of any real interest to serious film students. But the internet changed all that. In this post-YouTube world, capturing life on camera and turning it into compelling stories is something that millions of people do every day.

And if you look at the success of Vine, the brevity of the output only amplifies the creativity.

Until 21 October, you can vote for your favourite from the shortlisted films on show here. The range of styles and subject matter is staggering, and some of these are sure to be the names appearing on the big screen in years to come.

This site is also a wealth of information for budding film-makers, with top tips and inspiration from previous winners.
