October looks to be a busy month for Apple, if all the latest rumours about a refreshed iPad mini, new Macs and OS X Mavericks are to be believed.

Apple sent out invitations to its 22 October event on 15 October, running with the tagline "We still have a lot to cover". With an agenda that looks set to introduce a number of updates, it could be a big night for Apple and a big night for gadget fans.

New iPad and new iPad mini launch

Many reports have already noted that Apple introduced two tablets on 23 October 2012, the fourth-generation iPad and the iPad mini, so it wouldn't be too far-fetched to assume the company plans to make more iPad announcements on 22 October.

French website MacGeneration is one such publication igniting the hearsay. It has a decent track record and claimed that Apple would schedule the event on 15 October for iPads. That was the date of the invite, but in the right ballpark. Circulating whispers have theorised that Apple will introduce a new iPad mini with a Retina display at this upcoming October event.

However, Reuters reported that Apple's supply chain is unable to make enough Retina displays in time for the Christmas shopping season. This means the new iPad mini could be available in limited quantities - or Apple might not be able to launch the Retina iPad mini in October. All will be revealed shortly, but there are plenty of rumours circulating that point to a refreshed design for the iPad mini.

There have also been plenty of rumours about the new iPad 5 - the fifth-generation iPad - that's expected to be updated. We're expecting to see an updated body, colours to match the iPhone 5S and the incorporation of TouchID in the new iPad.

OS X Mavericks

Apple introduced a new version of OS X at WWDC in June 2013 which has been slowly bubbling away in the background. Apple's new OS promises to bring a number of changes to your Mac, including a focus on power efficiency and some clever new features.

Apple said we could expect to see OS X Mavericks later in the year, so the 22 October date falls conveniently into place. We've also seen a number of reports that Mavericks is at GM stage, meaning it's nearly ready for public launch. We'd expect confirmation of the Mavericks launch date on 22 October; we'd predict the new OS X to be available within a week of the event.

New MacBook Pro, MacPro launch dates

Daring Fireball's John Gruber has suggested that Apple will use the rumoured October press event to show off OS X Mavericks alongside the Retina iPad mini and new Mac Pro. Speaking of the cylindrical Mac Pro, Apple has long teased that it will release in autumn 2013. So, above everything else, it looks as though the new Mac Pro is likely to get a release date.

That said, 9to5Mac reminded us that Apple still has to update the MacBook Pro with Intel's latest Haswell chips. The MacBook Air was updated in June 2013 with Intel's latest hardware. The Haswell MacBook Air has been very well received, with a battery life of around 12 hours being one of the biggest factors. That's yet to appear on Apple's MacBook Pro line and there must be a reason for that.

Could it be that Apple has been waiting to debut a new design across the MacBook Pro line? Currently the MacBook Pro and MacBook Pro with Retina display are different in design so it might be time to roll out an update to unify design across the product line.

Of course, any new Macs will be built to showcase OS X Mavericks and given Apple's previous record, we'd expect new hardware to launch in stores soon after the announcement.

Summary

Apple looks set to have a bumper night on 22 October. We're looking at iPad updates, Mac updates and the OS X Mavericks release date. It will be a packed schedule if Apple does make all these announcements as predicted and there's also been rumours of a refreshed Apple TV.
