GoPro updates camera range with Hero3+ Black Edition: Smaller, lighter, mightier

GoPro has announced a refreshed line for its HD action cameras, called simply Hero3+. Two new cameras have been launched, but the daddy is the GoPro Hero3+ Black Edition.

Its housing is 20 per cent smaller than its predecessor, the HD Hero3 Black Edition, and offers a lighter overall package when it's installed in the official waterproof case (down to 40m). Battery life is claimed to last 30 per cent longer, and its Wi-Fi transfer speeds are quoted as four times faster.

A new video mode, SuperView, has been added to capture extreme wide-angles. There's also a new auto low light mode that intelligently adjusts frame rate for varying lighting conditions.

The Hero3+ Black Edition also comes with a new lens for sharper video and improved image quality all round.

A Hero3+ Silver Edition has also been added to the range, with two times faster image processing than its immediate predecessor. It can now shoot in 1080p at 60 frames per second and 720p at 120fps.

It too has a smaller housing, 15 per cent smaller than the Hero3 Silver Edition. And its Wi-Fi is similarly four times faster than before.

"We took the world’s best-selling ultra compact camera and made it better because we're relentless in our pursuit of delivering the best possible user experience to our customers," said Nicholas Woodman, founder and CEO of GoPro.

"We saw that we could make the Hero3+ significantly smaller and lighter while at the same time increasing battery life 30 per cent. We saw the opportunity to design a sharper lens, so we did it – improving GoPro's already highly regarded image quality.

"And we thought up exciting new features like SuperView, which enables the world's most immersive wide-angle video. These are all features that we as passionate GoPro users want for ourselves, and we're excited to share them with our customers around the world."

The GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition is priced at £359.99, and the Silver Edition at £279.99. Both are available from gopro.com.
