Roku Android app adds video streaming to Roku box

Roku has updated its Android app to allow users to stream videos from their phone to their Roku box.

The new update - which follows a similar feature upgrade to the iPhone version last month - means users will be able to stream local content on their smartphone to their box the moment they get home if they've been watching it on the way home.

As is normally the case with Android apps, the list of supported devices isn't endless, sadly.

Video playback is presently supported on select devices, including the Samsung Galaxy SIII, Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One, Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 (2012 edition), and requires Android 4.0 or later.

As with iOS, the supported Android device needs to be paired with a Roku player running software version 5.1 or later.

Roku says that for best results, it recommends using a Wi-Fi router that supports 802.11N.

The updated Roku Android app is available now in the Google Play store.
