Toshiba Camileo X-Sports hands-on: Challenging GoPro
Another action camcorder joins the fray at IFA 2013 in Berlin, this time in the form of the Toshiba Camileo X-Sports.
We found the Camileo X-Sport was lightweight in build and easy to navigate, but we can't help thinking it looks a like like the GoPro, or the Rollei Actioncam S-50 which was also launched at the show.
It sports a 12-megapixel CMOS sensor, slightly lower resolution than the Rollei which houses 14-megapixels, but it features an ultra-wide-angle lens and 10x digital zoom as well as an electronic image stabiliser. Of course it offers you 1080/60p video capture, which should be good for all your action needs.
There are a range of photo and video features on board, including Photo Burst which gives you up to 30 photos a second, Time Lapse, Continuous Photo, Looping Video and simultaneous video and photo so it is packed with options for you to try.
You'll be able to preview, playback and upload your videos and photos to social networks using the Toshiba Wi-Fi Connect app, available free on both iOS and Android platforms, plus the Camileo X-Sports comes with built-in Wi-Fi. Again, it wasn't something we could test properly but we did find scrolling through the options was easy and it was hooked up to a Toshiba tablet on the stand, which seemed to work without any problems. There's a 2-inch display on the rear which looked sharp enough for what you'd want to do with it.
You'll get a number of accessories included with the 1.5 metre shock-proof Camileo X-Sports, including a remote control for your wrist, casing to make the camcorder waterproof up to 60 metres and mounting accessories which can be attached via the tripod hole on the device. The full accessory pack that we were told would be included comprises a flat clip mount, flat adhesive mount, curved adhesive mount, side mount, bike mount, vented helmet mount, surfboard mount and tripod mount.
The accessories weren't on display so we couldn't see what they were like, but we like that so many are included and for such a range of activities. There are a number of others that can be bought separately too, including a head strap and chest pack.
A mini HDMI, Micro-USB and microSD card slot are present, supporting SDXC cards up to 64GB.
The Toshiba Camileo X-Sports is available in black, unlike Rollei's Actioncam S-50 which comes with changeable casing in different colours. However we were told you will be able to pick one up for between £230 and 240 by the end of November, which is around £55 cheaper than the Rollei.
