For portability and powerful zoom, combined in an intelligently automated design, Canon has unveiled two new PowerShot cameras.
The PowerShot SX510 HS, at £290, with its 24-720mm ultra wide angle lens will offer 30x optical zoom. This extends to an eye-popping 60x with Canon's ZoomPlus digital zoom. The 12.1-megapixel CMOS sensor and Digic 4 processing means shots and 1080p video, even in low light, should come out clearly. And you can share them easily, thanks to built-in Wi-Fi.
The PowerShot SX170 IS, for the more affordable £170, delivers 16x optical zoom on its 28-448mm wide-angle lens and features a 16-megapixel sensor that allows for 720p movies. This also uses Canon's ZoomPlus smarts to extend zoom digitally to 32x.
Both cameras use Canon's Optical Image Stabilizer with Intelligent IS technology, meaning it should be simple to capture sharp shots at longer focal lengths, even in low-light conditions. And if you're in a rush you can leave the settings to Smart Auto, which has 32 different scene modes.
The snappers also feature Eco mode. This helps photographers continue shooting for longer by conserving battery life. Up to 46 per cent more photos can be captured on the PowerShot SX170 IS and 32 per cent more on the PowerShot SX510 HS thanks to this feature.
Both models will be one sale in the UK and Ireland from 23 August.
