Netflix starts Profiles rollout: Up to five individual setups on each account, one for all the family

Netflix has started its global rollout of the new Profiles feature where each member of the family can have their own individual set-up options and recommended shows.

Anybody who has children will know that a Netflix account can often become a jumble of suggested shows and movies based on each member of the family's taste. Watch The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland and you can find that Arrested Development has been replaced with Dora the Explorer in the top row of the menu system.

With the new feature, however, each person in a household can have their own profile. They will get a unique personalised view based on what they've watched and the sort of content they like.

Each account can have up to five active profiles for no extra cost, so, on average, there should be enough for at least one per family member or flatmate.

Children's accounts can also be set to start up the Just For Kids section as default, meaning they get the content specially chosen for those aged 12 years or under.

"We continually innovate and are proud to deliver an even better, more personal Netflix experience," said Neil Hunt, chief product officer. "Now everyone in your home can have their own Netflix experience, built around the TV shows and movies they enjoy.

"No longer will your Netflix suggestions be mixed up with those of your kids, a significant other, roommates, or house guests."

Some accounts will get the Profiles feature from today. Netflix promises that it should be available to all accounts in the next couple of weeks.
