Office Mobile for Android finally arrives... but not in the UK or for tablets
Microsoft has released the Android version of Office Mobile for Office 365, adding editing functionality for subscribers to the software giant's cloud-based productivity suite, but only for the US at present. Also, it's for smartphones running Android 4.0 or above - tablet support is yet to be introduced.
Windows Phone 8 phone users will wonder what the fuss is about, every handset running the OS has come with Office Mobile pre-installed. And iPhone owners have had an app for well over a month now. Android owners have had to wait a bit longer.
The app allows Office 365 subscribers access and the ability to work on Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents from their phones and, thanks to automated SkyDrive synchronisation, carry on with working on them on a computer later. You will need a subscription to use the app, but those without can try the software for a month for free. After that it will cost $9.99 a month or $99.99 for an annual package. In the UK, it is £7.99 a month or £79.99, but the Android app currently won't work. The iOS one is available over here.
Microsoft says that versions of Office Mobile for Android will be released in other countries over the "next several weeks".
US Android owners can download it from Google Play now.
