Panasonic Lumix FZ72: Superzoom delivers huge 60x optical zoom, 20-1200mm equivalent

The Panasonic Lumix FZ72 looks as if it can show other superzooms a thing or two: certainly in the lens department, where this long-lens Lumix has a 60x optical zoom - that's a massive 20-1200mm equivalent.

It wasn't so long ago that superzooms' top-end was pushing into the hundreds, not thousands, of millimetres. The Lumix FZ72 - known as the FZ70 in the US  - not only delivers the 1200mm equivalent but also focuses on delivering a super-wide-angle 20mm. The f/2.8-5.9 lens means a bright f/2.8 aperture is available at the widest-angle, shrinking to f/5.9 at the longest-zoom - but that's still reasonably bright, all things considered.

As with other Lumix cameras, the FZ72 comes loaded with "Light Speed AF" for super-fast autofocus, lens-based Power OIS image stabilisation and the latest version of the Venus Engine with advanced noise reduction to processes the camera's 16-megapixel shots.

In addition to a hotshoe on top that's useful for accessory expansion, the FZ72 comes complete with a 202k-dot electronic viewfinder to complement the 3-inch, 460k-dot LCD screen on the camera's rear.

Full manual controls, point-and-shoot intelligent Auto (iA) and a fast burst mode of up to 9fps complete the package.

No final word on release date or pricing yet, but as the FZ72 is said to sit behind the top-spec FZ200 model we'd anticipate a slightly lower price point when it goes on sale later this year.
