Nook is cutting the prices of the Nook HD and the Nook HD+ tablets, as a celebration of the Get Reading festival, to be held on 13 July in Trafalgar Square, London.

Before you scream "fire sale!", Nook says that the offers are for a limited time only, but it will see the 7-inch Nook HD drop in price to £99 (8GB) and the 9-inch Nook HD+ will now start at £149 (16GB).

The price changes announce today will apply online and in stores, making the Nook HD tablets now even more compelling.

"To celebrate the free Get Reading festival and to help make digital reading more affordable across the UK, we have reduced prices on our award-winning Nook HD and Nook HD+ tablets for a limited time," said Jim Hilt, managing director, Barnes & Noble.

"We are committed to promoting the cause of literacy and we hope that families from all over the UK come to the Get Reading festival on 13 July for a fantastic day of events featuring some top authors and celebrities."

The price reduction follows the slashing of the price of the Nook E-Ink readers in April, also in celebration of the Get Reading festival. It means you can now pick up the whole range of Nook devices in the UK for something of a bargain.

When we first looked at the Nook HD tablet, we were impressed with the level of enhancement that Nook added, especially with magazines and graphic novels, but felt that the lack of regular Android app support was a negative. That was addressed by Barnes & Noble in May, bringing Google Play access.

Barnes & Noble has been struggling to compete with the likes of Apple and Android when it comes to actually selling devices, announcing in June that it was looking to reduce losses incurred in the tablet market.

But the company has committed to support those devices already in the market and our own experience is that there's plenty to get excited about, especially now the they're even more affordable.
