Generally speaking, unless you're a vegetarian of course, chicken forms a big part of the average person's diet. It's a great source of protein and a staple on most menus. This is probably because it's so cheap to buy.Ever wondered why that might be? If you've been following Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's TV campaign this week you'll have a better idea than most.
95% of the chicken we buy for meat come from intensively farmed sources. This means the birds are reared in cramped conditions, often never seeing daylight.
Free range eggs have been widely available and increasingly popular with consumers - this site aims to do the same for the broiler birds.
Free range chickens live happier, healthier lives before ending up on your plate. And they taste immeasurably better. Like with eggs, it might cost a bit more, but the more we insist on free range products, the quicker the prices will drop.
It's time to shop with your heart and your head rather than just your wallet.
