There is a distinct feeling that if a kitchen sink could have been attached to the Samsung ATIV Q, it would have been. Samsung has thrown everything at its new hybrid laptop/tablet device and it is an incredible piece of kit as a result.

Although there are many things to like about the device - including its superthin 13.9mm form factor and comparatively light weight at 1.29kg - the more immediately showcase feature of the 13.3-incher is that it features both Windows 8 and Android operating systems on the one machine. And they are instantly switchable, even sharing files between the two without your doing anything.

The screen, which also features 10-point touch control, has a resolution of 3200 x 1800 (275ppi), and the inner workings are managed by an Intel Core i5 "Haswell" processor. Intel HD Graphics 4400 back that up, while there is 4GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD hard disk.

Samsung claims battery life will last up to nine hours of use, and the camera is 720p.

The hybrid can be flipped in a number of ways, with the screen lying flat to make for a large-screen tablet device, raised slightly on a hinge, or nestled back laptop style. It actually reminds us a bit of the Acer Aspire R7, the one with the Star Trek Into Darkness tie-in, or the Sony Vaio Duo.

Of course, the difference from those rival devices is the ability to switch between Windows 8 and Android. You can even pin Android applications as tiles on the Windows 8 homescreen, which then launch in Android at a simple tap.

And if you take a picture, for example, it appears in the Camera Roll on both operating systems, meaning you needn't keep hopping from one to the other just to perform different functions. Your content will always be available to you.

A stack of other features are also on the ATIV Q, including the addition of an S Pen stylus - the same as the one found on the company's Note series of devices. And then there's compatibility with Samsung's new SideSync software, which lets you sync with an Android smartphone as a second screen, even having the phone's entire system appear on the PC as a virtual handset.

We'll be exploring those features in more depth when the ATIV Q arrives in the UK later this year.
