Foxconn and Mozilla to unveil Firefox OS device on 3 June

Mozilla and Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry confirmed in a press invitation sent on Monday that they would unveil a new product running Firefox OS and officially announce their partnership on 3 June.

A recent report by Focus Taiwan, which cited an unnamed industry insider, claimed the new Firefox OS product was likely to be a tablet. Hon Hai, otherwise known as Foxconn Technology Group, notably manufactures Apple devices and it is the 19th company to join Mozilla's Firefox OS project.

Mozilla previously announced a slew of telecom operators and manufacturing partners, such as Deutsche Telekom, Sprint, SingTel, LG and Huawei, when its Firefox OS-powered ZTE Open and Alcatel One Touch Fire unveiled at Mobile World Congress in February 2013.

Wall Street Journal report published on Monday, which also cited an unnamed source, claimed Foxconn was "aggressively" looking to grow its business by adding new clients and initiatives. The company apparently wants to reduce its reliance on Apple. The news closely aligns with another report from earlier this month by The New York Times that detailed Foxconn's increased interest in televisions.

As for the upcoming Firefox OS device, it is unclear if it will be a Foxconn-branded product or even a tablet instead of a smartphone, but we shall know soon enough.
