CES 2008: Samsung create 40GB CompactFlash drive

Mini drive, plenty of space

Samsung has announced that it is shipping Compact Flash card-sized hard disk drives for use in mobile consumer devices.

Available in 30GB and 40GB models, Samsung’s Spinpoint A1 hard disks continue the trend being set by multiple manufacturers at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that storage is getting bigger while the physical size of it is getting smaller.

Samsung’s latest hard drive, the A1, is just 42.8 x 36.4 x 5mm in size.

However, speed has been a casualty of the units. The unit features a 3600rpm rotation speed compared to standard hard drives at 5400 and 7200rpm.

The unit will also feature a 2MB buffer memory, shock resistance of up to 650G, a 2-second drive-ready time, and nearly inaudible acoustic noise.

Samsung’s A-Series is currently shipping with an MSRP of $199.
