Google has confirmed that it has reached almost a billion Google Android activations, adding 500m activiations in the last year alone.

Kicking off the company's developer conference in San Francisco on Wednesday, the company said it had activated over 900m Android devices in the past five years.

Meanwhile those 900m users have also downloaded a lot of apps. Google has confirmed that among Android users, 48 billion apps have been downloaded.

"Google Play has delivered 48 billion application installs to date, and 2.5 billion in the last month alone," said the company. That number is up from 25 billion in September 2012.

Google hasn't detailed how many of those 900m devices are currently in use, and how many of those 48 billion app downloads are updates to current apps.
