LG's 55-inch curved OLED TV shipping in June

LG announced on Monday morning that it is launching the world's first curved OLED HDTV next month, starting at 55 inches. We got our first look at the new television technology at CES 2013, and then later at LG's corporate headquarters when we visited earlier in April.

LG plans to make the 55-inch curved HDTV, known as the 55EA9800 specifically, available for pre-order beginning in May, with shipments to eager customers in June.  Right now, LG has a conventional 55-inch OLED set on sale priced at around $10,000 in the US, and the curved version will be on the more expensive side at $13,515 when it launches.

You'll find the curved television to be 4.3mm thin with a weight of a mere 17kg. The curved screen aims to create a panorama effect. In our hands-on time at CES 2013, we noted the viewing angles to be staggeringly good. The picture quality was also exceptional with the curved screen working to reduce the glare.

LG has yet to detail the 55EA9800's release outside of South Korea, and given the flat version is found only in the US right now, it may be awhile for the curved version to hit more markets. We'll keep you posted.
