One billion songs downloaded in UK, Adele most downloaded ever
One billion digital tracks have now been downloaded legally in the UK alone, the Official Charts Company has revealed. The magic figure was reached on Monday, so it will have risen even more since.
It's been 10 years since legal music downloads started in the country, but the speed at which new songs are sold is ramping up dramatically. The Official Charts Company says three million tracks are now downloaded in the UK each week.
In 2012, 188.6 million songs were sold online, through stores such as iTunes and Amazon.
The Official Charts Company also revealed which artists and tracks have been downloaded the most, with British singer Adele topping the pile with her song Someone Like You.
The rest of the top 10 is predominantly taken up by American artists, save for Belgium's Gotye and Adele's fellow Brit Academy alumnus Jessie J. Calvin Harris also appears on Rhianna's We Found Love as a featured guest.
Geoff Taylor, chief executive of the British Phonographic Industry, believes download rates with rise again with the advent of connected cars. "As fans increasingly download music on the move, tablets, smartphones and connected cars will drive another phase in digital music's expansion," he said.
