Amazon Kindle Fire 8.9 now available in the UK

Amazon is bringing the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 to the UK, so you'll be able to get your hands on the larger Amazon tablet from today for a competitive £229 for the 16GB or £259 for the 32GB.

Up until now Amazon has offered only the smaller 7-inch Kindle Fire HD model, but now gives you the choice of sizes that have been available in the US since November 2012.

The 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD comes with a 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution IPS display. That's 254ppi, putting the tablet up there with some of the sharpest devices around.

One of the headline features is the stereo speakers offering Dolby Digital Plus sound and our experience is that these are among the best speakers you'll find on a tablet.

There's an 1.5GHz OMAP4470 processor at the core, and 16GB of storage.

The Kindle Fire HD sits on your Amazon account, bringing your Kindle books and AmazonMP3 music into the device, with seamless integration to Amazon Cloud, be that photos or documents, as well as the entertainment it offers.

There's a video service on board too, with Lovefilm providing the flicks, although you'll need a subsciption to stream movies to your tablet and there's no download option.

There are plenty of apps on offer, although Amazon curates the offering through the Appstore, which aims to bring you the best and most-popular apps that you'll find elsewhere on Android tablets through Google Play. You can sideload apps, however, if Amazon doesn't give you access.

We were impressed with the Kindle Fire HD 7-inch when we reviewed it. Now you have the choice of a larger device with a more-impressive display, so be sure to check-out our full review.
