Angry Birds has long been rumoured to have an animated series in the works. Those rumours just got real in the form of Angry Birds Toons, which will be premiering on 16 March over at the Angry Birds website.

The series promises to bring fans "deep into the heart of piggy island" whatever that means. We expect it has nothing to do with Lord of the Flies and a lot more to do with keeping overexcited kids entertained.

Questions will be answered explains Rovio, like some sort of bizarre episode of Lost - well, even more bizarre.

"What makes Bomb Bird so angry? Why is the King Pig the King Pig? And are those mischievous piggies ever going to get hold of the eggs?"

The episodes will be launching weekly from 16 March and will keep both bird and pig fans happy. It doesn't look like there will be an app update or launch to go alongside the cartoon, but then who knows.

In the meantime, Rovio has put together a nice trailer, complete with the usual catchy music. We have to be honest, it does actually look quite good.
