The two new Kindle Fire tablets and its front-lit eBook reader, the Kindle Paperwhite, have helped Amazon to smash previous records for Kindle sales, according to the online retailer.

"Sales of Kindle devices were more than three times higher than any other single day in the history of," the company told Pocket-lint. "Christmas shoppers made Kindle Fire the bestselling product across all of on Black Friday."

Reasons for a strong boost in sales include positive response for the new front-lit Kindle, allowing you to read it in bed without the light on, and £30 off its entry level tablet, the Kindle Fire, throughout Amazon's Black Friday sales period.

"In response to strong customer demand we included Kindle Fire in Black Friday deals week, dropping the price to just £99, and the reaction has been incredible," said Jorrit Van der Meulen, vice-president, Kindle EU. "Customers purchased more than three times as many Kindle devices on Black Friday than on any other day in its history on, and our previous record was impressive.

"This fantastic Kindle Fire offer runs until midnight, Monday 26 November, so customers still have time to snap up a Kindle Fire in time for Christmas."

The new Kindle Fire, which is the cheaper of the two tablets available in the UK, is normally £129.
