Klipsch has upgraded its G-17 AirPlay iPhone speaker dock to enable Wi-Fi Direct. It means users will be able to stream music to their speakers via an iOS device without the need for a Wi-Fi network.
Users will need to keep their iPhone or iPod within 30ft of the speaker system, but the Klipsch G-17 will remember your device so that each time the two come back into proximity your device will automatically pair with the G-17.
The Klipsch G-17 Air iPhone dock is also compatible with Android phones and houses a 3.5mm aux and USB port, though neither will be able to be used when Wi-Fi Direct is in use.
Current owners of the Klipsch G-17 Air iPhone dock can receive the update via the Klipsch Set-Up App, which is available free from the Apple App Store. The speakers are also available new, complete with Wi-Fi Direct for £429.99.
Klipsch’s announcement comes the same day as Libratone unveiled its Zipp speakers, claiming they were the “first and only device” that enables AirPlay without the need for a Wi-Fi network. Not anymore we’re afraid, Libratone.
