Dutch government plan iPod Tax

Money for old rope?

29 April 2005 17:58 GMT / By Stuart Miles

The Dutch government is planning on introducing a tax on MP3 players in an attempt to stop the music industry losing out on royalties from music pirates downloading and then storing files on their MP3 players.

The new levy which believed to be as much as £2.50 a Gb would mean an additional £60 on a 20Gb iPod and an additional £180 on Apple's 60Gb iPod Photo.

The Netherlands, like Germany, already charges similar levies on DVDs and blank CDs, the money of which goes to pay for lost royalties supposedly missed out by pirating the tracks in the first place. However the figures of up to 30p per disc are no way near the £2.50 per Gb sited above.
