Sony Action Cam takes on GoPro in adventure video stakes

Sony has confirmed that it is trying to better the GoPro with a new action camera aimed at sporty types looking to capture their adventures as they happen.

Simply called the Action Cam, the new camera from Sony will offer Full HD recording and image stabilisation and can be controlled with your smartphone over Wi-Fi via the new PlayMemories Mobile app from Sony.

Featuring an Exmor R CMOS sensor and 170-degree angle Carl Zeiss lens, there is a choice of five video record modes, from highest-quality Full HD 30p to VGA for extra-long shooting times. There are also two special slow-motion modes (4x and 2x) if you need to slow everything down.

Weighing just 90g with the supplied battery, ultra-compact HDR-AS15 Action Cam features a single large Record button to start "hands-free" shooting - ideal if you're wearing gloves.

The Action Cam also comes supplied with a tough waterproof case for shooting in rain, snow or at depths right down to 60m.

Optional extras available from launch include a handlebar mount, a wearable headband and a waterproof headmount kit for fans of cycling, surfing, hiking, wakeboarding and other marine sports.

The new HDR-AS15 Action Cam from Sony is available in Europe from mid-October 2012.
