Corning Willow Glass to protect the curved gadgets of the future
Corning, the company behind the extra-tough Gorilla glass found in smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S III, has announced a new type of glass - one that is flexible.
The new Corning Willow glass promises to "revolutionise the shape and form of next-generation consumer electronic technologies" by allowing manufacturers not to have to worry about creating devices with flat surfaces.
"Displays become more pervasive each day and manufacturers strive to make both portable devices and larger displays thinner," said Dipak Chowdhury, division vice-president and Willow Glass programme director. "Corning Willow Glass provides the substrate performance to maintain device quality in a thin and light form factor."
The company is hoping electronics manufacturers are already making flexible displays, like Samsung and Sony, will be able to use the glass to protect the LCD screens.
No word as yet on whether any company has agreed to start using the glass, although Corning has confirmed it is talking to the usual parties.
