"In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes,” Benjamin Franklin once wrote.

It’s not a cheery thought, but it’s probably true.

What’s less certain is where our taxes go.

Every month, millions of us open our paypackets to see large chunks of money being taken at source to pay for … well… stuff.

And with taxation on the increase, and new taxes causing much consternation (hot pasty anyone?) it’s hardly surprising that  wheredoesmymoneygo.org is doing brisk business.

You can see at a glance where all your hard-earned money goes. Most of it, you’ll probably think “fair enough”, but it still makes fascinating reading.

When you look at the totals spent by individual government departments you start to get a flavour of just how much it costs to run a country.

At least, it shows how much money we give them. Whether it’s spent wisely is another matter entirely.
