OverDrive Reader turns your PC, tablet or smartphone into an eBook reader without the faff

A new eBook reading platform is set to be launched that lets bookworms read virtually, without the need for any specific apps or eBook devices.

OverDrive Read can be used on any browser-based device that runs on Chrome, Safari or Firefox, including tablets, such as the iPad, smartphones and PCs. It works without any need to download new software and plug-ins.

With more than 800,000 titles in its catalogue, a URL is created for each of them, which in turn enables budding readers to preview and review the various books. It also allows authors to engage with readers, including discovering how they stumbled across their books.

By downloading webpages to their device, OverDrive Read also means readers can continue reading their eBooks offline, although this facility is not possible on all devices - only those that allow you to save web pages to browse later.

OverDrive Read will initially be demoed at Book Expo America in New York City, which is due to be held between 5-7 June, before being rolled out officially.
