Sonos Sub ups the bass, now you really can create that wireless home cinema setup

Sonos has announced the launch of the Sonos Sub, a new a wireless subwoofer that will be available from 19 June to add plenty of bass to your Sonos music experience and opening up the possibility of turning your Sonos music system into a fully fledged home cinema experience.

Those ready to embrace the new sound will be able to place it anywhere in a room, plug it into a power source, press a button and follow some simple prompts on the controller, says the company.

The subwoofer itself includes two force-cancelling speakers positioned face-to-face meaning all the sound and energy from the music comes through loud and clear, and none of it is lost in cabinet buzz or rattle.

However, those worrying about finding a place in their living room, bedroom, boat, or wherever, shouldn't, according to Sonos: "The Sub’s unique design and smart wireless signal allows you to place it anywhere you want in the room - even lying flat under a sofa or bed - without any loss in sound or performance."

The Syb works with all Sonos amplified components: Connect:AMP/ZonePlayer 120/ZonePlayer 100; Play:5; Pkay:3. However it does not work with the non-amplified Sonos Connect/ZP90/ZP80.

It will be controlled via the usual array of apps created by the company.

We can see its main appeal to further extend the capabilities of the wireless music system and make it a viable solution for home cinema fans looking to boost their movie watching experience. Users of two Play:3 or Play:5 devices can already pair the speakers to create a stereo sound; adding this new component would complete the package.

Those looking to get the new Sonos Sub will be able to in a high-gloss black lacquer finish for £599 from 19 June in the UK.

If that sounds a little a rich, a cheaper black matte finish version will be available in October 2012 for £499.

No word on whether there will be a white model to match the white speaker range from Sonos.
