Google to make last minute bid for US spectrum

Sources say announcement imminent

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google is imminently to declare its official interest in the US spectrum auction.

Quoting "people familiar with the matter" the news site states that Google will announce its intent to bid on Friday 30th November - just a working day before the official deadline on 3rd December.

The auction is for the 700MHz wireless spectrum in America, being sold off by the FCC after being "freed up" since analogue television stopped using the bandwidth.

Google has previously suggested it will make a bid, but no definite confirmation has recently been made by the company.

Specualtion is rife that owning this chunk of bandwidth would eventually see Google either extend its "cloud computing" offerings or move to be a mobile phone operator, of sorts, in the States.
