Next Issue, the Netflix for magazines, launches in US - Android-only initially
Next Issue, the long-awaited collaboration between publishers Conde Nast, News Corp, Hearst Corp, Meredith and Time Inc, has finally launched for Android tablets in the US. It offers the latest and back issues of some the State's biggest magazines, all to read on your device.
Where it differs from rival digital magazine delivery services is that, while you can just buy one issue of your favourite title, you can also get an Unlimited Plan - a subscription that allows you to browse and peruse a whole gammut of magazines for one monthly fee. Sort of a Netflix for periodicals, if you like.
There are two Unlimited Plans on offer, Basic and Premium. Basic offers a wide range of monthly titles (27 at present), including Esquire, Golf, Glamour, Vanity Fair and InStyle. While Premium adds several weekly mags, including Time, People, Entertainment Weekly, Sports Illustrated and The New Yorker.
Basic costs $9.99 per month, Premium $14.99. Simple.
If you don't want an all-you-can-eat package, individual subscriptions are available, with the US edition of Esquire costing a very respectable $1.99 a month. If you're already a print subscriber, you can add the digital version for an extra 99 cents per month.
The magazines are all available through a dedicated application - Next Issue - that is currently available only for Android tablets with screen resolutions of 1024 x 600 or 1280 x 800.
An iPad version is promised, and you can be notified of its arrival if you sign up to a mailing list on the company's website: www.nextissue.com.
Pocket-lint has also been told by Next Issue Media that although it is currently a US-only concern it is "evaluating international as a potential distribution opportunity, but has nothing to announce at this time".
Fingers crossed though, it'd be better than thumbing through the mags in WHSmith each month until the manager turfs you out.
