Ofcom, the telecom's industry regulator has brought in new rules mandating when switching mobile network, phone users will have their number transferred for incoming calls within 2 hours.

Currently the transfer of a mobile number from one network to another it takes up to 5 days.

The new rules state that this must fall to 2 days on 1st April 2008 and will be reduced to 2 hours by 1st September 2009.

"These rules will make it quicker and easier for consumers to keep their number, thereby strengthening competition and consumer convenience", Ofcom explained.

"It will also help protect consumers from the risk of losing calls if their old providers' network fails."
