Europe to get .eu domain name by year end

Companies get given chance to be apart of an online europe

21 April 2005 23:48 GMT / By Stuart Miles

An .eu internet domain name suffix will be up and running alongside current domain names such as .com, .uk and .fr by the end of the year according to the European Commission.

The move will allow European companies to create a .eu suffix and show that they are apart of Europe on the web.

The domain name identity has been a long time coming however - six years in face and only became possible to do legal wrangling last month.

To stop cybersquatters, for the first four months only public companies and trademark owners will be able to apply to use the .eu domain name.

The commission is hoping that the new domain will not only increase awareness on the internet of the European Union, but also be helpful to companies that trade across the European single market.
