Google Maps adds London Underground real time alerts

Apparently, get this, there's some big sporting shindig happening in London this summer (why are we always the last to be told this sort of thing?) and Google has added live transit updates to its Google Maps service in anticipation.

Yep, the London Olympic Games are coming to town, so Android, mobile and desktop users of Google Maps can now see up-to-the-minute tube information, including service alerts and planned engineering closures. Click on a Tube station icon on the web browser and you will get train times and alerts for each line served.

In addition, service alerts will now show up in directions information. Get directions will take into account any problems on the Tube network.

The new addition is now live on maps.google.co.uk and Google Maps for Android. Again, click on a station on the latter and you'll be taken to a specific page with the relevant information.

You'll be able to get to the dressage final from the Taekwondo preliminaries on time after all. Phew.
