Logitech has broken away from its iPhone dock heritage with a new speaker system that's designed specifically to work with Apple AirPlay. The Logitech UE Air Speaker will stream compressed or uncompressed audio from any iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch (2nd, 3rd or 4th generation), iPad, iPad 2 or new iPad loaded with iOS 4.2 or later. It'll also play tracks from any Mac or PC on your network via iTunes 10.1.
As it uses your home network, no Apple device needs to be plugged into the Air Speaker, although it does have a retractable dock connector for recharge purposes.
There's no Bluetooth shenanigans at work, so the stereo speaker doesn't need to pair with a device, and it'll work with any compatible Apple device that's hooked up to the same network - including visitors' own handsets as long as they install the free application.
Logitech hasn't revealed the actual power output of the Air Speaker, only that it features a stereo set-up with claims that it "delivers a big soundstage". But we're looking forward to getting one into the Pocket-lint labs to find out exactly what that means.
The Logitech UE Air Speaker with Apple AirPlay will be out in April for £299. You can find out more at www.logitech.com.
