Samsung develops RFID chip for mobile devices

Small single-chip solution

Samsung has developed a single-chip radio frequency identification (RFID) reader for mobile devices.

Embedded RFID reader chips can provide consumers with product or service information retrieved from RFID tags in items such as movie posters, clothing, and museums or tourist exhibits.

The chip's small 6.5mm x 6.5mm dimensions and low power consumption level means it's suited for mobile applications.

"RFID chip reader systems allow consumers to pull context-specific information into their mobile devices while on the go", said Dr. Chilhee Chung, senior vice president of Samsung Electronics System LSI division.

Global demand for mobile RFID is expected to grow from $26.9 billion in 2007 to $701 billion by 2010 so it's on our tech to look forward to going mainstream list.
