Revealed: Who'd win the Brit Awards based on pirate downloads

The Brit Awards ceremony will be held in London tomorrow night (21 February), and several British or international artists will walk away with a gong given to them by the UK music industry. However, we've found out the list of winners in advance. Well, if the whole thing was based on illegal file-sharing, that is...

Music analytics company Musicmetric has cheekily come up with a prediction for each category at the Brits by looking at figures on Torrent download sites. According to the company, statistics on filesharing trends are now being used by the music industry itself, in order to gauge demand for an artist or track, and it offers a range of analysis to aid them.

Musicmetric tracks the numbers of Torrent downloads and pinpoints the individual release and geographic location, in order to accurately predict trends before sales emerge. It's one way of using piracy to the music industry's advantage.

To highlight its talents, the analytic agency has looked at the illegal success of each of the Brit Awards' nominees in most of the categories, and these are the results.

Best Male will be Ed Sheeran, while Adele will reprise some of her success at the Grammy's with three wins for Best Female, Best Album and Best Single. Jessie J will win the Best Breakthrough Brit, and Coldplay will scoop Best Group.

Internationally, Bruno Mars will take home Best International Male, Rhianna Best International Female and Foo Fighters will cop an International Group award. If it were down to those filthy pirates, Nicki Minaj would get the International Breakthrough trophy.

It'll be interesting to see if any or all of these come true tomorrow night. The ceremony is being broadcast on ITV live at 8pm.
