We've seen a few gamepad accessories for the iPhone in the past, one being the Gametel Bluetooth adaptor we've previously played with, but the iCade Mobile is the first that allows the phone or iPod touch to be swivelled around for either landscape or portrait play.
For all intents and purposes, the Bluetooth controller looks like a stretched Sony PSP. It has top bumper buttons and triggers, four action buttons and a direction pad. The iOS device slots into a central housing and, well, that's about it.
It's a fairly hefty piece of kit, feeling substantial in the hand, and works with any of the rapidly expanding list of games that have been converted to be compatible with Ion's iCade system. Unfortunately, you can't just play any game at all, but with more devices like this coming, you can bet that developers will be keen to sign up - especially as we've been told that the control codes are simple to implement at programming level.
At $79.99, the iCade Mobile isn't cheap, but it could help provide the impetuous needed for hardcore gamers to take the iPhone seriously.
