Lucasfilm has posted a Star Wars: Episode 1 The Phantom Menace 3D trailer on YouTube in every format, from 240p up to Full HD 1080p, but not in 3D. Surely that misses the point somewhat? Especially as YouTube is capable of showing 3D in many guises.
The movie is due to hit cinemas and theatres globally from 10 February 2012 - which must also go down as a missed opportunity. You would think that, considering that we've waited so long for around the billionth re-release of the Star Wars movies (and that we're going to have to wait until 2015 for a 3D version of the first of the original trilogy, Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope) we could wait a few more months to allow the release date to be 4 May - as in, May the fourth be with you.
All of the films, it seems, are to be re-released in glorious, normal 2D too... The trailer states that the first one, at least, will also be screened in "select 2D theaters" (sic).
Either way, like every other Star Wars sap who owns the VHS sets of the original trilogy, mucked-about trilogy, DVDs of both trilogies, and the latest Complete Saga box set of Blu-rays, we'll most likely be down the multiplex come February. Sigh. See you there.
