Apple sees more than 1 million iPhone 4S pre-orders in first 24 hours

Every time Apple releases a new iPhone it seems some sort of record is set and the iPhone 4S is no exception.

The handset has seen more than 1 million pre-orders in the first 24 hours since opening, smashing sales records of every previous device Apple has produced. The iPhone 4 managed 600,000, nearly half what the new iPhone 4S has secured.

"The first day pre-orders for iPhone 4S have been the most for any new product that Apple has ever launched and we are thrilled that customers love iPhone 4S as much as we do" said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide product marketing.

The iPhone 4S is due out on 14 October but already has people queuing outside Apple Stores in order to secure a handset. People began waiting outside Apple's flagship London store on Regent Street at 4pm on Friday.

The iPhone 4S is to ship with iOS 5 and the new Siri application, as well as dual-core A5 chip and serious up-specced 1080p capable camera.
