Oh yes, it's a busy day for Canon with the company launching a myriad of quality compacts. First came the Canon PowerShot SX150 IS, and now we see two in the Canon IXUS range coming to the fore, with a focus on low-noise imaging.
The two in question are the IXUS 1100 HS and the IXUS 230 HS, both claiming world's slimmest in their respective zoom categories and boasting a whole host of features to enable crisp photos at high definition.
These features, on both models, include a 4-stop optical image stabilizer (3.5-stop on the 230 HS) and new Intelligent IS system, which offers greater detail in stills and movies, automatically identifying the shooting situation and selecting the most appropriate image stabilization from seven possible modes (Normal IS, Dynamic IS, Powered IS, Panning IS, Macro IS, Tripod mode, Dynamic Macro IS).
They also bring Canon's HS system which should enable you to take some decent photos in a whole host of lighting conditions. A mixture of the 12.1-megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor and proprietary DIGIC 4 image processing, apparently, "helps to capture the natural ambiance of a scene, producing crisp, low-noise images without having to use the flash or a tripod." The two compacts can also shoot 1080p video.
Also of note is the 12x optical zoom of the 1100 and the 8x of the 230, which considering their size is pretty impressive.
Specifics for the IXUS 1100 HS include a 12x zoom, wide 28mm lens and 12.1-megapixel sensor, wrapped up in an compact metal body measuring with 3.2-inch PureColor II Touch LCD. You also get Powered IS Smart Auto (32 scenes) high-speed burst and Super Slow Motion Movie to boot.
Specs for the IXUS 230 HS come in a little lower with 8x optical zoom and a 3-inch screen, but the rest is pretty much the same; both coming with lots of creative modes including miniature effect, fish-eye effect, super vivid and poster effect, toy camera and monochrome.
The Canon IXUS 230 HS is priced at £229, whilst the Canon IXUS 1100 HS comes in at £369; both are available in October. For full info you can head over to Canon's website
