Boxee iPad app finally hits the App Store

Back in May, Boxee's VP of marketing, Andrew Kippen told Pocket-lint that the web-video specialist was hoping to have its iPad app landing "shortly" and it looks as if he's been true to his word with Boxee for iPad now hitting the App Store.

The app has a big social element to it with plenty of Twitter and Facebook sharing and bookmarking options on board, as well as a nice watch it later function so you can save up your VOD content for a rainy day.

But the killer features are the media streaming - videos, music, and photos from your PC or Mac to your iPad over Wi-Fi using the new Boxee Media Manager - and the the Send to Boxee Box feature.

This lets users of Boxee's hardware watch their iPad videos on their TVs, sans-wires and sans-having to worry about messing around with video conversion software too. There's even an experimental AirPlay option within the app too, which will let you select your Boxee Box.

The Boxee Box has also been boosted by a software update. As well as the iPad app compatibility, Boxee Box 1.2 adds the option to filter premium sources in the library such as Vudu and HBO Go (in the States), a new featured apps section, updated app categories, NFS and AFP support (and improved SMB/CIFS support), improved HTML5 support in the browser, support for OS X Lion as a source for video files and the option to receive beta releases of the firmware going forward.

Boxee for iPad is in the App Store now, and is free. Boxee Box 1.2 is rolling out "over the next few days".
