This is one of those projects that makes you realise that, despite the ever-increasing pace of technology, the human desire to challenge the achievements of the past is still alive and well.

When you think about fast cars, some might think of Ferrari, Porsche, or Lamborghini. When you think about really fast cars, Bluebird is a name that has sent shivers down the spines of speed freaks for over a century.

Sir Malcolm Campbell was one of the pioneers of powered speed records, on land and on water, and it was this adventurer spirit that was passed on to his son, Donald. Like his father he travelled faster and faster until he was killed behind the wheel of the Bluebird jet boat on Lake Coniston in 1967.

The Campbell legacy lives on, and can be seen in action this weekend (weather permitting).

Sir Malcolm’s grandson, Don Wales, is behind the wheel of the Bluebird electric car, and this weekend hopes to set a new land speed record at Pendine Sands in South Wales.
