Facebook planning "Awesome" event for 6 July
Google might be enjoying plenty of coverage of it’s new Google+ social network launched this week, but Facebook isn't having any of that putting out invites for an event next week at it's HQ in Palo Alto that promises to be “Awesome” according to founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
Perhaps feeling the pressure from Google, Facebook has said that it will be holding the event on Wednesday 6 July 6pm UK time.
Not much is known as to what the company is planning with rumours circling around Silicon Valley as to what Facebook has in store.
The main guess is a new tablet version of its website for the iPad, something which currently is only available on the BlackBerry PlayBook.
Other suggestions are a specialised app for photo-sharing on the iPhone. It's something that Microsoft has already built into Windows Phone 7 that users will be able to enjoy when it’s next version, Mango, is out later in the year.
It allows people to tag photos directly from the photo after they've taken it rather than having to load the photo in the Facebook app.
UPDATE: TechCrunch is citing sources as saying it's Skype integration via a desktop app.
"This isn’t the main project that team is working on, but next week, says a source with knowledge of the partnership, Facebook will launch a new video chat product, powered by Skype, that works in browser," before adding "The product has been built on Skype and will include a desktop component. It’s not clear to me whether that means it will just work if a user has Skype already installed on the computer, or if additional software will need to be downloaded even if the user already uses Skype."
