Yahoo is chancing its arm in the app game - no, not by releasing its own app store as every other web giant seems to be doing - but by releasing an app that helps you look for other apps.
Yahoo AppSpot is available now for both iOS and Android and its task is simple - to filter out the 425,000+ apps in the App Store and the 200,000+ ones in the Android Market and present to you the apps most relevant for your interests.
It scans the apps you've already got installed on your mobile device, so you won't be presented duplicates, and then will provide you with personalised daily picks, precise matches, related apps through the "more apps you’ll love" section and direct links to download the app straight away.
"Mobile users rely on apps to continuously be informed and entertained, yet discovering new apps on a daily basis is still much more difficult and less intuitive than searching for Web content on the PC," read a post introducing the apps on the Yahoo blog.
"At Yahoo! Search, we think there is a better way - both for discovering personally relevant apps on a daily basis and finding the utility apps that help get the job done - regardless of the type of device or platform."
Yahoo has also announced a desktop app search client - Yahoo App Search - again, with direct download links and recommendations.
Both apps and the desktop client are live now, and are free.
